In addition to the belly button that looks more prominent, some pregnant women may experience pain in the navel. Basically, belly button pain during pregnancy is not dangerous, but it certainly can interfere with the comfort of pregnant women. Navel pain is normal and can be experienced by pregnant women in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. Generally the navel pain will disappear by itself after pregnancy or six weeks after giving birth.

Causes of Navel Pain during Pregnancy

Navel pain during pregnancy can be caused by the following things:

1. Pressure on the uterus

The main cause of belly button pain is increased uterine pressure. This happens because of an increase in fetal size and uterine size.

2. Stretching the skin and muscles

As pregnancy increases, the skin and abdominal muscles of pregnant women will be increasingly stretched. Stretching on the skin can make pregnant belly buttons become sore and itchy.

3. Navel piercing

Piercings on the navel can be one of the causes of the navel becomes easily sick and irritated. Therefore, if pregnant women have piercings in the navel, piercings should be removed and not used during pregnancy.

4. Umbilical hernia

Navel pain during pregnancy can also be caused by an umbilical hernia. The umbilical hernia is characterized by a bulge or swelling around the navel. The risk of developing an umbilical hernia will increase if pregnant women are also obese.

Relieve Discomfort in Pregnant Woman's Navel

When pregnant women begin to feel pain and discomfort in the navel, some ways that can be done to relieve it are:
  • Routinely clean the navel to prevent irritation and pain.
  • Applying lotions that are safe for use by pregnant women, for example lotions made from cocoa butter.
  • Sleep in a sideways position and prop your stomach with a pillow to support the abdominal load.
  • Wear loose clothes and pregnancy pants.
  • Wearing a special belt for pregnant women, to support the stomach.
When experiencing pain in the belly button, some of the conditions above can be the cause. Although pain in the navel of a pregnant woman is normal, pregnant women should immediately consult an obstetrician if the pain in the navel does not also disappear for a long time or accompanied by other symptoms, such as cramps, fever, vomiting, and bleeding.
